A password works like a combination lock. If it only uses the 26 lowercase letters, each character has 26 options, and eight characters give 26 to the 8th power, about 209 billion combinations.
Add capitals, digits and symbols and each character has up to 95 options. Every extra character multiplies the total again. A computer guessing ten billion times a second gets through 209 billion in about 21 seconds, but 95 to the 12th power would keep it busy for more than a million years.
Real attackers also try common words first, which is why a long phrase of random words beats a short clever one. This is exponents, the heart of Algebra 2 and of computer security.
